UPDATE: Teen arraigned on felony charge in death of tow truck driver

Trent Fletcher Sheldon was arraigned on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing death.

A $250,000 personal recognizance bond was set, with the conditions Sheldon surrender his driver license, submit to drug testing after the arraignment and randomly twice a week, and not contact the family of Jason Schultz.

Schultz, 28, was killed while pulling a vehicle out of a ditch in Clyde Township Jan. 15.

St. Clair County Prosecutor Mike Wendling said a toxicology report showed Sheldon had marijuana in his system when he struck and killed Schultz. That report was provided to the prosecutor's office Wednesday.

Michigan's Move Over Law requires motorists to move over for stationary emergency vehicles, or slow down and pass with caution if it is not possible to change lanes. The law applies to police, fire, rescue, ambulance and road service vehicles. A driver who violates the Move Over Law is guilty of a misdemeanor and faces four points on their license and fines of about $150.

18-year-old charged in death of tow truck driver in St. Clair County

Jason Schultz, 28, had his tow truck on the southbound lane of traffic on North Road, south of Keewahdin, at about 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 15 while he was attempting to pull a vehicle from the ditch on the west side of the road.

Sheldon was behind the wheel of a Jeep when he passed the truck on the shoulder and hit Schultz, the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said. The driver of the vehicle getting pulled out of the ditch was in his vehicle and was also struck. He has since been released from the hospital.

Teen pleads guilty in tow truck driver's death

A Fort Gratiot teen pleaded guilty in the death of Preferred Towing's Jason Schultz Tuesday morning.

Trent Sheldon, 18, will be sentenced by Circuit Judge Daniel Kelly for causing a death while operating a vehicle while intoxicated. It is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
