Second-degree murder added to charges against hit-and-run driver who killed 8-year-old Detroit girl

Police say Kamari Smith was with friends making a purchase from an ice cream truck stopped on Robson in Detroit when she was hit.

Cortney Sheilds, the 23-year-old Detroit man accused of driving the Dodge Charger that struck 8-year-old Kamari Smith on May 19 and then sped off, is now charged with second-degree murder. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office added the charge Tuesday after it was learned that Smith succumbed to her injuries early Monday. Shields is also charged with reckless driving and failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing serious injury or death. Leonard Crosby, 19, of Detroit, Shields' passenger, is charged with being an accessory after the fact. Police say Kamari Smith was with friends making a purchase from an ice cream truck stopped on Robson in Detroit when she was hit.
