Tow truck driver struck along highway

Wrecker driver suffered significant injuries.

A tow truck driver was injured when police said a vehicle hit him as he was tending to a crashed vehicle along a highway.

Randy Hammer owns Tigers Towing in Battle Creek and has 25 years of experience.

A Tigers Towing coworker told 24 Hour News 8 that Hammer was operating the levers on the side of his flat bed truck as he was tending to a vehicle that had slide off Interstate 94 and into a ditch near Helmer Road near Battle Creek.

He saw another eastbound vehicle coming toward him, after police said the driver lost control on the icy road.

Hammer suffered significant injuries to his legs after the collision that occurred around 7:24 p.m. Tuesday, police said. The 48-year-old from Battle Creek was transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo where hospital staff state he is in fair condition.

The oncoming driver, a 21-year-old woman from Jackson, and her female passenger were not hurt, police said.
