Petoskey Fire Destroys Several Apartments, Fireworks Believed To Be Cause

Petoskey Department of Public Safety, Bear Creek and Resort Township Fire Departments responded around 2:30 Monday afternoon.

They say the fire was caused by a young man lighting off a firework.

"When the first engine arrived on scene, we had a well-involved balcony second floor area as well as the east end of the building well-involved with flames coming out of the roof," Petoskey Department of Public safety acting director Matthew Breed said.

Neighbors say they're devastated for all of the families who have lost everything.

Authorities say preliminary reports indicate the fire began after fireworks were shot off from one of the balconies on the complex.

That fire would quickly spread and badly damage all 16 of the living units within the complex.
