Judge acquits Carleton student in crash that killed 3

The crash killed 20-year-old James Adams, of St. NORTHFIELD, Minn. (AP) - A judge has acquitted a Carleton College student of misdemeanor charges in a crash that killed three classmates and injured another last year. Sparks was driving an SUV that slid into the path of a semi on Highway 3 near Northfield on Feb. 28, 2014. Judge Colleen King ruled prosecutors failed to prove that 22-year-old William Sparks of Evanston, Illinois, was guilty of careless driving and of failing to drive with due care. Defense attorney Peter Wold tells the Star Tribune (http://strib.mn/1TOAisa ) Sparks is continuing classes at the college.

A Carleton College student who was the driver of an SUV involved in a fatal crash back in 2014 has been acquitted of careless driving. Sparks pleaded not guilty to the charge in June, and he was acquitted of the charge on Friday, Dec. 11. Sparks had been charged with careless driving after the Minnesota State Patrol said his speed contributed to the crash, even though he was traveling below the posted speed limit. Feb. 28, 2014, on Minnesota Highway 3 at Dakota County Road 47 near Northfield. Twenty-two-year-old William Shelton Sparks of Evanston, Illinois, was driving with four passengers in the SUV when the vehicle hit ice and spun out, traveling into the southbound lanes.

Driver is charged in crash that killed 3 Carleton students

The complaint says 21-year-old William Sparks of Evanston, Illinois, was going too fast in wintry conditions. 

Three college students were killed in a crash with a semi while traveling on an icy road near Northfield Friday, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The broadside crash happened on Highway 3 at County Road 47 in Dakota County around 3 p.m.

According to the state patrol, an SUV carrying five college students was northbound on Highway 3 when it spun out and went into the southbound lanes. The semi, which was southbound, hit the vehicle broadside.

According to the state patrol, James Adams, 20, of St. Paul; Paxton Harvieux, 21, of Stillwater; Michael Goodgame, 20, of Westport Conn., were killed in the crash.

The driver of the SUV, William Sparks, 20, of Evanson, Ill., and Connor Eckert, 19, of Seattle, Wash.,were both seriously injured.

Danny Terry, 56, of Pioneer, Tenn., was the driver of the semi and had no apparent injury, according to the state patrol.
