Officers say Hidalgo ran away, but a male passenger remained in the vehicle. He was rescued by state troopers before he could be injured by the flames.
Authorities are searching for the driver of a burned-out van who escaped into a wooded area west of Collins Saturday night after crashing it following a high speed chase. Mississippi Highway Patrol officials have identified the suspect as Jose Hidalgo. They say he was the driver of a Ford Windstar that tried to skip a police checkpoint on Highway 184. Officers pursued the van on several roadways, before it ran off McDonald-Chapel Road into a grove of trees and caught fire. Officers say Hidalgo escaped, but a male passenger remained in the vehicle. He was rescued by state troopers before he could be injured by the flames. He is not being charged. Officers say at this point, Hidalgo only faces misdemeanor charges. It's unknown if he was injured in the crash.
