Rankin County Deputy Coroner Cliff Dunlap confirms that Olivia Rae Watkins was killed Tuesday (3-4-14) afternoon in Florence, Mississippi.
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey says that the 17 year old lost control of her car and hit a tree. The cause of death is listed as blunt force trauma. It was a single car accident. Watkins was driving a four door sedan.
It happened around 5:00 p.m. Watkins was a senior at McLaurin High School. Robin Haney, Director of Public Relations for the Rankin County School District issued a statement this (3-5-14) morning.
It reads, "Yesterday, a Rankin County School District (RCSD) student was killed in a car accident." RCSD Superintendent Dr. Lynn Weathersby says, "The safety and well being of everyone involved is our number one priority. Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone affected in this tragic accident. We are thankful for all of Rankin County's First Responders who responded to the accident."
Counselors will be available for the students and faculty Wednesday (3-5-14) at McLaurin High School.
