James’ cousin, Breanya Smith, and sister La’Tisha Michael, 18, described James as “really active and rambunctious.” Spiderman was his favorite, Smith said, but Michael added he also loved Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. James, the youngest of four siblings, had just turned 8 in August. He had transferred from Boyd Elementary to Johnson last year.

Rice died Friday morning at UMMC from injuries sustained when he was hit by his school bus on September 4, when he stopped to tie his shoe in front of the bus. JPS Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray says Rice's class mates were told about what happened Friday morning, but they're too young to process what it means.
