Two Olive Branch police officers are considered heroes Friday morning after jumping into a lake to save a woman and her 7-year-old granddaughter from their sinking van.

Two Olive Branch police officers are considered heroes Friday morning after jumping into a lake to save a woman and her 7-year-old granddaughter from their sinking van.

Those officers took their oath to protect and serve to a whole new level and because of their quick actions a Mid-South family won't have to deal with tragedy right before the Easter holiday.

This accident happened in Olive Branch at a lake in the Maywood subdivision near Maywood Drive and Cedar Hill Lane around 10:15 Thursday night.

WMC Action News 5 was the only news crew on the scene as emergency crews worked to pull the woman's vehicle out of the water.

The woman somehow lost control of her van, and ended up in the lake. Olive Branch Police Officers William Brock and Julia Humble arrived on scene minutes later and didn't hesitate to jump into the frigid water.

They swam about 50 yards to the sinking van and pulled the 45-year-old woman and her 7-year-old granddaughter to safety.

Police Chief Don Gammage calls his officers heroes.

"They didn't think. They reacted and they reacted the right way," he said. "And that led to two lives being saved tonight."

The officers and the grandmother were taken to Methodist Hospital in Olive Branch to get checked out. They are all expected to fully recover.

The woman's granddaughter is recovering at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. She's also expected to be fine.
