Before the accident Cass County Sheriff’s Deputies were responding to the home of Joseph Pendley, the owner of the car, to conduct a welfare check.

Investigators have determined that just before 8:30pm, a car registered to Pendley lost control, struck a ditch, and rolled over. Between search efforts from the first responders to the accident, helicopters, and authorities searching Pendley's property, he has yet to be found. A local sheriff apparently received a call from someone claiming that Pendley had wanted to harm himself.
