Former Fire Chief David "Rudi" Gaines killed in Lakewood motorcycle accident Sunday

Family and friends are remembering a former fire chief who died Sunday after a car struck his motorcycle in Lakewood. David "Rudi" Gaines, a single father of five, left his Lakewood home to go meet his new granddaughter for the first time. He was riding on Cedar Bridge Avenue when a car driven by 28-year-old Aurohom Zeffren made an abrupt turn into his lane and hit him.
A roadside memorial with candles and flowers has been arranged at the intersection of Cedar Bridge and Arlington avenues where a volunteer fire chief was killed in a motorcycle accident on Sunday. David Rudy "Gee" Gaines, 52, of Lakewood died after his bike was struck by a car at 3:20 p.m., according to Sgt. Frank Work of the Lakewood Police traffic department. "I was at the crash site last night and people have started putting up a memorial," said Work. Gaines was traveling in the right lane on Cedar Ridge Ave. when his motorcycle was struck by a 1995 Honda Accord driven by Avrohom Zeffren, 28, of Lakewood, according to Work. Zeffren told police that he was changing lanes and failed to see Gaines on his bike. He struck the motorcycle when he switched from the left lane into the right. The motorcycle swerved into the shoulder and struck a third vehicle, driven by Rachel Weidman, 26, of Lakewood. According to a memorial page on the Lakewood Scoop website, Gaines doubled as a fire chief and a contractor for the Lakewood Township Inspection Department.
