Witnesses said the car appeared to be speeding, and Pleasantville police said the driver of the southbound bus tried to avoid a head-on collision. The car scraped along the driver's side of the bus and spun around, while the bus wound up on the sidewalk, barely avoiding a utility pole.

Two people were killed and several others were injured when a New Jersey Transit bus and a car collided in southern New Jersey.

Authorities say the crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. Monday in Pleasantville. It wasn't immediately known if the people killed were in the car or the bus.

The Press of Atlantic City reports the car was heading north on Franklin Boulevard when it swerved for unknown reasons and struck the bus. The car then flipped around but remained upright.

Six people were in the car, and four of them were taken to the hospital along with some bus passengers. But further details on their injuries have not been disclosed.

The accident forced authorities to close a stretch of Franklin Boulevard, causing travel delays in the area.
