Lawsuit claims negligence by driver, father in fatal Ridgefield crash

Miles Reme, who was in the front passenger seat, died after Tamer Ammar lost control of his 2014 Honda Civic about 1:30 a.m. on July 24. The car swerved onto a sidewalk on Broad Avenue, striking two bus stop signs before crossing the road and crashing into a building.

Wrongful death lawsuit filed in Ridgefield crash that killed Fort Lee man

The father of a 20-year-old Fort Lee man who crashed his car into a building -- killing his close friend and seriously injuring another -- should have known about his son’s history of drunk driving, a wrongful death lawsuit claims.

A 20-year-old Fort Lee man was killed Thursday morning after a car he was riding in slammed into a Ridgefield building, according to authorities.

Miles Reme was pronounced dead at 2:40 a.m. at Hackensack University Medical Center following an early morning crash in Ridgefield, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office announced Thursday afternoon. Reme was the front seat passenger in a 2014 Honda Civic that crashed into a building at Broad Avenue and Edgewater Road. The driver of the car, Tamer M. Ammar, is in "very serious condition" at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson, Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a release. Another passenger James Racanelli, 20, of Fort Lee, is also listed in serious condition at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Ammar, 20, of Fort Lee, was driving north on Broad Avenue early on Thursday when he lost control of the car, drove onto the sidewalk on the righthand side of the road and plowed through two bus stop signs, Molinelli said. He then allegedly drove off the sidewalk, began driving north in the southbound lane of Broad Avenue and then drove over a grass median at the intersection of Broad Avenue and Edgewater Road. Ammar then crashed head-on into the exterior wall of a CPA office at 579 Broad Avenue, Molinelli said.

The crash scene, from the bus stop signs to the building, was approximately 1400 feet in length, Molinelli said. Representatives from the prosecutor's office did not immediately return calls for additional information.

Authorities received reports of the crash at about 1:30 a.m., and the incident closed down Broad Avenue at Edgewater Avenue and Howard Road, as well as parts of US 1&9 near the Ridgefield Circle.

The crash is still under investigation. Authorities have not yet released why Ammar lost control of the car.
