Franklin Township motorcycle crash kills off-duty Longport police officer

The motorcyclist killed Monday in a crash near Route 40 and Tuckahoe Road was an off-duty Longport police officer, according to The Press of Atlantic City. Sgt. Charles "Tom" Adams was operating a Harley Davidson west on Harding Highway at about 4:13 p.m. Monday, police said. As Adams went through the intersection with Tuckahoe Road, a Chevrolet SUV driver tried to make a left turn onto Harding Highway, said police.

21-year veteran of Longport Police force dies in tragic accident

According to authorities, Sgt. Adams, who was off duty at the time of the accident, was traveling west on Harding Highway when his motorcycle struck the side of an SUV. Police say the SUV was attempting to make a left hand turn onto Harding Highway at the time of the crash.
Witnesses told police the motorcyclist was riding a Harley Davidson west on Harding Highway when he approached the intersection with Tuckahoe Road when he collided with the driver of a red Chevrolet SUV. The collision threw the victim from the motorcycle. He was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV was taken to Inspira Hospital in Vineland for unspecified injuries. According to colleagues within the department, Adams was a Longport police officer for 21 years and was highly decorated.
