Plane skids off LaGuardia runway, crashes into fence; 6 hurt

John M. Cox, who spent 25 years flying for US Airways and is now CEO of consultancy Safety Operating Systems, notes that LaGuardia's runway is "reasonably short" but still safe.

The plane crashed through a chain-link fence and sent passengers saddled with bags and bundled up in heavy coats and scarves sliding down an inflated chute to safety on the snowy pavement.

A Delta Air Lines jet skidded off a runway and crashed through a fence after landing Thursday at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
A Delta flight from Atlanta to LaGuardia Airport in New York City skidded off the runway while landing Thursday, crashing through a chain link fence. Delta Flight 1086 skidded off of the runway while landing at about 11:10 AM. Six people sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Images show the plane coming to rest in the snow with its nose perilously close to an icy Flushing Bay. The plane had 125 passengers and crew aboard, including New York Giants tight end Larry Donnell. Delta Airlines and the NTSB are investigating the accident.
