On Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at approximately 4:57 p.m. State Police conducted a vehicle and traffic stop on the Thruway at mile marker 48 northbound.
It was about 5:30 p.m. when a routine traffic stop was underway on the Thruway, and the trooper at the scene attempted to take the driver, 37-year-old Bernell Wright of Bronx, NY, into custody for suspected drug possession when Wright resisted arrest and then ran from the scene. Wright ran into the northbound lanes and was struck by a vehicle driven by Martin Nicoll of Roselle, New Jersey. Nicoll lost control of his vehicle, exited the east shoulder and his vehicle overturned. Nicoll and his passenger, Jill Weinberg of Chappaqua, NY were uninjured. Wright was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
