According to a news release, the Freightliner, which was hauling a tanker filled with whey, crossed over the southbound lanes and came to rest in a swamp area off the southbound shoulder. After being struck -- diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway and some of the whey cargo spilled into the swamp area, state police say.

Reed, of Cortland, was driving his 2010 Subaru Impreza south on Route 90 in the town of Homer around 8:42 a.m. when the crash occurred.
