Woman killed, man injured in High Point crash.

A woman from Randolph County, who was traveling in a minivan on E. Kivett Drive, died Wednesday afternoon when the vehicle collided with a truck and was pushed into a utility pole at the intersection with Triangle Lake Road.

A woman from Randolph County, who was traveling in a minivan on E. Kivett Drive, died Wednesday afternoon when the vehicle collided with a truck and was pushed into a utility pole at the intersection with Triangle Lake Road.

The fatality happened at 1:20 p.m., blocking traffic in both directions of Kivett and Triangle Lake for several hours.

High Point police identified the victim as Joyce Ashburn, 61, of Trinity. The driver of the minivan, Ronald Ray Dunn, 68, of Jamestown, was injured, according to police.

More than a dozen police and emergency vehicles filled the intersection as officers and paramedics responded.

The woman died at the scene, said High Point Police Department Capt. Mike Kirk. Emergency crews had to use equipment to extract the body from the passenger’s seat in the crushed steel of the 2009 Dodge Caravan.

Kirk said the minivan was traveling east on Kivett. The driver of the minivan was turning left onto Triangle Lake when the vehicle cut in front of the truck, which was going west on Kivett, Kirk said.

The driver of the 2007 Kenworth truck locked the brakes to try to avoid a collision, but the truck smashed into the minivan and slammed one side of the vehicle against a utility pole.

No charges had been filed. Since the wreck involved a commercial motor vehicle, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will perform an inspection of the truck, Kirk said.

“I don’t see any charges, barring DMV coming back and showing us something that we didn’t see at the scene,” he said.

The accident Wednesday was the fourth fatal crash this year in the city limit. The four fatal accidents have claimed six lives, Kirk said.
