The North Carolina Highway patrol says a 16-year-old died Wednesday afternoon in a single-car crash.

It happened just before 3 p.m. on Lebanon Rd. near Mill Creek Rd. in Orange County.

Troopers said 16-year-old Desmond Piccini of Mebane was driving a 1989 Ford Mustang east on Lebanon Rd. when the car travelled onto the eastbound shoulder.

Piccini apparently overcorrected, causing the car to cross the center line onto the westbound shoulder, where it hit a rock wall and overturned.

Piccini was killed. A passenger in the car - 16-year-old McCray Williams of Graham - suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released from Duke Hospital.

Troopers said early indications are speed played a role in the crash, but the investigation was ongoing.

Witnesses stated that the teens were street racing.

Records show that Williams was also a passenger in another fatal car accident in January, 2013, that killed two other teenagers. That crash also involved alleged street racing.

Piccini was a baseball player at Eastern Alamance High School. A vigil was planned Thursday evening.
