Hurricane force winds may have caused crash on Alligator River Bridge

The Alligator River Bridge, which connects Tyrrell and Dare counties, closed around 10:15 a.m. when the big rig turned over. The National Weather Service says winds at the bridge were clocked at 77 miles per hour, which is just above hurricane force. The cab of the 18-wheeler is on the bridge, while part of the trailer is hanging over the side.

Troopers said the truck was headed west on US 64 when it lost control and landed on its side, partially dangling over the edge. There was strong wind in the area at the time, and troopers said that could have caused the wreck. The Outer Banks Voice said the crash happened as thunderstorms moved through with wind gusts over 70 mph.
