3 dead in crashes involving 9 vehicles on I-40 in Johnston County

The driver of the truck carrying lumber failed to reduce speed for stopped traffic, Baker said, striking several vehicles causing a chain-reaction of multiple vehicle crashes.

Driver charged in fatal crash that closed I-40

One of the victims was identified Thursday as Michael Anthony Peters, 64, of Youngsville. The names of the other two victims haven't been released, pending notification of family.

The other two victims were identified as Tidelands Health Board of Trustees Chairman H. McRoy Skipper Jr. and his wife, Jo Skipper.

Futch said that, while dozens of people stood in the median videotaping the scene, he and several other Good Samaritans tried to save as many people as he could.
