Dozens of passengers on a Megabus had to be evacuated Thursday morning after the bus’ tire caught fire. The bus was traveling from Cincinnati to Chicago and was on westbound I-74 near Dry Fork Road when it happened. Passengers say the first sign of trouble was the sound of an explosion. The tire blew and was so hot it burst into flames, according to fire investigators. About 40 passengers were on the bus and all of them were able to get off safely. They were taken to the Harrison Township Civic Center to wait for a replacement bus. The lingering concern is luggage. The cargo containers are near the tire that caught fire and most of the luggage was burned or scorched. Firefighters doused what was left with water. Passengers say the Mega Bus waiver says it will only pay $250 in damage, but some on board said they have pieces of luggage that are worth that much. Mega Bus released a statement, “Megabus.com apologizes for any inconvenience to all affected and is taking steps to reimburse customers for their loss, in addition to providing a full refund.” All lanes of I-74 were closed for a few hours but reopened by 11:30 a.m.
