Rootstown High School student killed in Summit County crash on Valentine's Day

The Rootstown superintendent released this statement on the 11th graders death:

On behalf of the entire Rootstown community, I would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family of Bailey Simons, a Rootstown 11th grade student, who passed away on Saturday night. We have organized a community gathering for Monday night at 5:00pm in the HS gym for students, parents, staff, and community members. The goal of this gathering is to just provide a place for the Rootstown Family to be together in this difficult time. On Tuesday, at the HS we will have the following professionals present to assist with the grief counseling of our students: our HS counselor, a crisis response team from Town Hall II and Childrens Advantage, several Coleman clinical counselors, a crisis counselor from NEOMED, and several church leaders. We greatly appreciate their support.

Also on Tuesday, we will be postponing the 9th grade testing until a later date to be determined. However, we will proceed with the elementary and MS testing as scheduled on Tuesday.

Please keep Bailey’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Andrew Hawkins

Bailey Simons of Rootstown was driving on South Main Street near the intersection of Samoa Drive in Green when her Chevy Cavalier crashed into a tree at around 5:30 p.m. on Valentine's Day. She was pronounced dead at the scene despite wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Weather/poor road conditions appear to have been a factor.
