Sledding accident in Ohio leaves 9-year-old critically hurt

Police in North Ridgeville say the boy was hit by a car Tuesday afternoon when his sled went into a street at the bottom of a popular sledding hill. Officers say the boy became trapped underneath the vehicle. Media reports say he was flown to a Cleveland hospital, where he was in critical condition Wednesday. A neighbor tells WEWS-TV in Cleveland that the boy's family was at home cooking dinner when the accident happened. Much of Cleveland and northern Ohio has had a mild winter up until this week, when several inches of snow and low temperatures moved into the region along Lake Erie.

The accident remains under investigation, but North Ridgeville police said Friday that there will "likely to be no charges against the driver of the vehicle involved." "Our son Drew Hayden passed away this afternoon. We cannot say enough words to thank the community for their outpouring of support, love, hugs, prayers, donations and anything that we needed." He was the kindest, most loving boy with an imagination far beyond what we can put to words which made him the greatest son.

Hayden was hit by a car Tuesday when he glided into the street at the bottom of a popular sledding hill and got trapped underneath a car. He died Friday at a Cleveland hospital. Police have said it's unlikely that the driver will be charged but an investigation is ongoing. Forty-four-year-old driver Chris Nagel was in the car with this teenage son when the accident happened.

Vigil caps off weekend of remembrance for North Ridgeville boy killed in sledding accident

The North Ridgeville school district placed a donation box in the gym during a varsity basketball game against Amherst Friday. Molly Darnell, who lives in the Meadow Lakes housing development, lead a prayer, then asked attendees if they wanted to say a few words. The vigil was just one of many ways members of the community honored Drew over the weekend. NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio — Hundreds of people bundled up and braved the bitter cold Sunday night to show their support for the family of a 9-year-old boy killed in a sledding accident. Matt Luca, who lives in Meadow Lakes and organized the vigil, said he knows the family indirectly.

Community rallies around 9-year-old critically injured in sledding accident

Parents in the Meadow Lakes neighborhood said they’re planning to keep their kids away from the hill where Drew was hit. “Although it’s fun every single time we do it, there’re definitely risks involved, and we're too close to the street,” Salem said. North Ridgeville Police said charges are possible, however the incident remains under investigation.
