The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says an Oklahoma City man was killed and a woman critically injured in a 2-vehicle collision on Interstate 44 near Newcastle in which the other driver and passengers fled the scene.

The man's name has been withheld pending notification of relatives, the patrol reports.

The fatal collision occurred about 10:10 p.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of the interstate at mile marker 104.

The man, who was driving a pickup, was dead at the scene. A passenger in the pickup, a 28-year-old woman of Oklahoma City, was taken by helicopter to OU Medical Center where she was admitted in critical condition with head, arm, internal, external trunk and leg injuries.

The man had tried to make a u-turn and was struck by a sport utility vehicle driven east on the interstate, the patrol reports. Seat belts were not in use in the pickup. It is not known if the occupants of the SUV were wearing seat belts. Troopers were told by witnesses at the scene three people were seen running away from the crash site.
