Deputies arrived on the scene shortly before 5 p.m. and were assisted by Oregon State Police, Bend and Crook County fire medics and the county Road Department.
Two die in head on crash on Powell Butte Road Friday evening
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office reports that a Honda Accord headed south, for some reason, drifted over the center line on a straight stretch near Pronghorn Resort, and directly into the path of a northbound Chevy Suburban.

Richard Patterson, 21, was driving his Honda Accord southwest on Powell Butte Highway when he crossed over the centerline and struck a Chevy Suburban head-on. Patterson died from injuries sustained in the crash. 35-year-old Ryan Reed, the driver of the Honda, suffered serious injuries. Two other people were riding in the Suburban: Stephen Harnden, 65, and his son 35-year-old Joseph Harnden. Stephen died at the scene, and Joseph was treated and released at a hospital. Richard Patterson's pit bull died in the crash as well. All people were wearing seat belts, and police are working to determine how fast the vehicles were traveling.
