A Tidewater woman died after her car fell down a steep embankment into the Alsea River Saturday evening.

Makala Osborn, 18, was driving a Ford Escort on East Canal Creek Road near Waldport when witnesses reported seeing her car careening down a 50-foot embankment.

“The vehicle was reportedly seen upside down in the river before fully submerging in the water,” said Sgt. Adam Shanks of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders couldn’t get into the doors or see into the car due to murky conditions, Shanks said. A towing company removed the vehicle from the water.

Osborn was found with her seat belt on in the driver’s seat. She was the only person in the car.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation.

Drugs or alcohol were not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
