2 Dead in Amtrak Crash Near Philadelphia

The train struck the backhoe in Chester, Pennsylvania -- approximately 15 miles outside of Philadelphia -- and came to a stop in the neighboring town of Trainer, Pennsylvania, the fire department said.

Fox29 reported that two workers operating a backhoe on the tracks were killed when their vehicle struck the passing train. About 300 passengers were on the train but none appeared to be seriously injured.

The Palmetto train 89 had left New York City early Sunday and was bound for Savannah, Ga., carrying 341 passengers and seven crew members, according to a statement from Amtrak.

6 ABC and others are reporting that two have died as a result of the incident. A spokesperson for Amtrak would only confirm that 35 passengers were transported for treatment, and that no passengers were killed in the accident.

The Palmetto train 89 was packed with nearly 350 passengers and crew at the time of the fatal smash and around 30 people are believed to have been injured. 

Witnesses said the train driver blew the horn seconds before the crash but the construction equipment could not be moved in time.

 

Senator: 2 dead in train-backhoe crash were Amtrak workers

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters at a New York news conference on another subject Sunday that he was told by Amtrak board chairman Anthony Coscia that the workers killed were the backhoe operator and a supervisor, both Amtrak employees. He said debris from the crash flew into the first two cars, causing the injuries to passengers.

Joseph Carter, Jr., 61, of Wilmington, Delaware and Peter John Adamovich, 59, of Lincoln University, Pennsylvania both died from multiple blunt force injuries. Carter was a backhoe operator while Adamovich was a worker.

Frigo said the "engineer placed the train into emergency" about five seconds from the end of the recording and added that the train's speed at that time was 106 mph. The track speed at that location is 110 mph, he said.
