Dedicated public defender Andrew Grimes dies after North Charleston wreck

Grimes was either going to or coming from the Charleston County jail to see clients when the crash occurred in the area of Michaux Parkway, Pennington said. Details remain scarce, but his vehicle reportedly struck a tree, he said. Grimes was responsive at the scene, but later died at an area hospital, Pennington said.
Andrew Grimes, a well-respected assistant public defender from Summerville, died Tuesday afternoon after he was in a car crash in North Charleston. Public Defender Ashley Pennington said his office was in mourning today, with lawyers from throughout the region reeling from the news. "He was beloved by court staff, prosecutors, his clients and, of course, our office," Pennington said. "He will be sorely missed." Pennington said that prior complicating health problems contributed to doctors being unable to save Grimes.
