“This is a tragedy anywhere,” Lance Corporal David Jones of the SC Highway Patrol said. “When you lose four lives on a highway, that creates a large impact on a community on a state as a whole.”

It’s not clear if wet road conditions played a role in the crash, but Bullock said there was heavy fog, rain and traffic at the time.
Four people were killed in an early-morning single-vehicle SUV accident on Interstate 95 in Sumter County near mile marker 141. A Honda Pilot carrying seven people exited the roadway, and hit a guardrail and a tree in the median. The driver, Juan Escoboza Sr., Maria Tapia, Clarabel Montero, and Luis Alberto Tapia were killed. The cause of death for the four victims was blunt force trauma. The coroner reports the victims were driving to Florida to visit family for the holidays. Three other passengers in the SUV were injured. Two of the passengers have been taken to a local hospital while one was transported by life flight to be treated. It is not yet known what caused the SUV to leave the roadway.
