A Landrum High School student was killed in a late-night wreck in Spartanburg County, according to the Spartanburg County coroner.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened about 9:40 p.m. Monday on Landrum Mill Road.

The coroner identified the driver as 17-year-old Michael Collin Wessinger, who was driving home at the time of the accident.

Troopers say Wessinger's 2006 Ford Mustang was traveling west on Landrum Mill Road when it went off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

Wessinger was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner said.

He was a junior at Landrum High School, according to the coroner.

The coroner says it appears Wessinger over-corrected after crossing a double yellow line.

The temperature outside was well below freezing, but there is no word if conditions contributed to the wreck.

This accident remains under investigation.
