A veteran of the Afghanistan conflict was killed Saturday when he crashed his 2007 Hummer into a tree on Firetower Road in Anderson County, authorities said.

James Arthur Gravley, 42, of Piedmont, died in the crash.

Investigators said Gravley was traveling at a high rate of speed and was thrown from the vehicle on impact. Gravley was not wearing a seat belt, the coroner said.

The wreck happened less than a half-mile from Gravley's home, investigators said.

Gravley was a former South Carolina National Guardsman who served in Afghanistan with military police.
