Clifton Braunwalder, 13, killed, and mother Sondra S. Braunwalder, 47, seriously injured after they are struck by a car while changing a flat tire on westbound I-24 near Smyrna, Tennessee

A child has died and his mother was hurt in a hit-and-run collision allegedly caused by a driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 in Smyrna on Thursday afternoon. The crash was reported about 1:30 p.m. at mile marker 66, near Sam Ridley Parkway. The child, his mother and his sister were outside their car changing a flat tire when they were struck. The suspected driver, identified as 33-year-old Tina L. Wilson, kept driving in a Chevrolet Cavalier after the collision, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. THP says a good Samaritan who witnessed the crash followed Wilson into Davidson County, reporting her location to authorities. Wilson found in Davidson County and taken into custody. She will be booked into Rutherford County Jail to face charges of DUI, leaving the scene of a fatal crash and failure to report a fatal crash. Officials said there was a passenger in the suspect's vehicle, but it is unknown whether the passenger will be charged. The child, later identified as Clifton Braunwalder, 13, was rushed to StoneCrest Medical Center, where he died. His mother, identified as Sondra S. Braunwalder, 47, was also taken to StoneCrest for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. His sister was not injured. The identities of the victims have not been released.
