Patton said that with further questioning from police, Bailey offered a contributing factor to the crash: "Her attention was diverted from the task of driving because she was looking at the fall leaves."

At around 3:10pm, Bailey's car crossed over the center line, went up the curb on the opposite side of the road, and struck a tree which caused the vehicle to roll and eject her, as she was not wearing a seatbelt. After sustaining serious injuries, she was taken to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment.
