DPS Trooper Robbie Barrera said a 2015 Hyundai was traveling northbound at an unsafe speed when the vehicle collided with the 18-wheeler. The crash caused the Hyundai to travel off the highway into a grass ditch on the east side of the roadway.
Off-duty El Paso cop charged with DWI in deadly crash in Jarrell
Barrera said the El Paso officer was driving a Hyundai north on Interstate 35 at an unsafe speed when it collided with an 18-wheeler truck, causing the Hyundai to veer into a ditch on the east side, Barrera said.
The driver of the 18-wheeler got out of his vehicle to help the officer, but was then hit and killed by another 18-wheeler truck that veered into a ditch and caught fire, she said.

When Rutter got out of his truck to survey the damage, he was struck by another 18-wheeler that was trying to avoid the initial crash. A third 18-wheeler struck debris in the road and caught on fire. Rutter died at the scene of the crash.
