Girl found dead in water after southeast Dallas wreck

Rescuers from the Dallas Fire Department used two boats and a helicopter to search the water after the crash, eventually recovering the 7-year-old's body just after 8 p.m, two hours after the car landed upright in the creek.

Girl’s body found in floodwaters after southern Dallas crash

The girl, her mother, a man and three other children (ages 5, 6 and 9) were in a vehicle that crossed one or two lanes of U.S. Highway 175 (C.F. Hawn Freeway) at Second Street, hit an embankment and flipped over into floodwaters about 6 p.m., sheriff’s spokesman Raul Reyna said.

Police in Dallas say a total of six people, including two adults and four children, were in a westbound SUV on Highway 175 near 2nd Avenue on Saturday evening when the driver, Johnathan Hawkins, attempted to get into the center lane. Upon realizing there was another vehicle in the lane, he swerved back into his lane, striking a concrete barrier, then swerved to the right, crossing two lanes of traffic before hitting an embankment and causing the SUV to flip. Two children, ages 9 and 7, were ejected from the vehicle and landed in the the flooded creek running alongside the roadway. The 9-year-old was pulled from the water, but the 7-year-old was missing immediately after the accident. Her body was recovered after a two-hour search by rescuers. The 9-year-old who was ejected and the other two children, ages 5 and 6, were taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The children's mother, Jona Flake, and the driver were also taken to a local hospital.
