2 dead as chartered bus with Texas school athletes crashes

Texas Department of Public Safety authorities say two people are dead after a head-on crash involving a pickup truck and a chartered bus carrying 34 coaches and athletes from seven El Paso high schools returning home from a regional track meet in Lubbock.

The students were from El Paso, Austin, Irvin, Andress, Chapin, Jefferson and Bowie High Schools.

Authorities said the pickup truck burst into flames. The passengers on the bus were evacuated through a window.

UPDATE: Irvin track coach killed in crash involving EPISD bus in Hudspeth County

Officials confirm those injured were taken to Del Sol Medical Center and University Medical Center with non-critical and non-life threatening injuries. Two people were killed, including Irvin High School social sciences teacher and track coach Arcadio Duran was killed.

Officials say Duran was a "dedicated member of the Irvin faculty and devoted coach."

Student on EPISD charter bus details moments leading to deadly crash

A student who was on the EPISD charter bus that crashed Sunday, killing a high school track coach, described the crash to ABC-7 on Monday.

 "He saw the driver coming at the bus and he stood up to tell everyone to hang on," Webb said.

It's a warning students say possibly saved their lives and something those who knew him best say he would've done in a heartbeat.   

UPDATE: Memorial for Coach Duran this Wednesday at Irvin

EPISD officials say the memorial is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the school's Memorial Stadium.

The high school is located at 9465 Roanoke Dr.

The brother of Irvin High School coach Archie Duran said losing him has been extremely hard but is thanking the community for its support.

Wrong-way driver involved in deadly EPISD charter bus crash had alcohol in his system

Records in Lea County, New Mexico, show Lawson was previously charged with careless driving in 2009. He pleaded no contest and was fined $231.
