City police Chief Clinton Wooldridge says officers tried to stop the SUV for a traffic violation in Edna, 90 miles southwest of Houston, early Thursday, but the vehicle sped away. He has no information on their legal status in the U.S. He says two other people who ran from the crash scene have been detained. As police chased the car on Highway 59, it flipped several times.

JACKSON COUNTY, Texas - Edna police say that at least six people are dead and seven others are injured after a chase ended in a crash. Police say the SUV had its back seats folded down and removed so more people could fit inside the vehicle. Police started chasing the suspects in an SUV near Corpus after an alleged traffic violation. The SUV eventually rolled north of the Loop 521 exit, ejecting several occupants and shutting down the entire highway. Edna PD also says some of the residents were from Honduras and Guatemala.

Six people are dead after a police chase this morning in Edna, a town northwest of Victoria. The vehicle turned onto Highway 59 northbound at County Road 300. Two people who allegedly fled the crash on foot are now in police custody.The crash happened on Highway 59 after police say they tried to stop a Ford Explorer in Edna for a traffic violation. The driver wouldn't stop, so police gave chase around 1:30am.Police say the vehicle fled north on Highway 59 feeder, but then turned around at the dead end of the feeder road and back into Edna. Three people were flown by Life Flight to area hospitals, and six others were transported via ambulance to Jackson County Hospital.Police are still on the scene investigating the crash and trying to identify the driver and crash victims.
