Anita Benton, a cheery bookkeeper at a family-owned scrap metal yard in Houston, had spent Saturday evening Christmas shopping with friends and her teenage daughter, Winter. The pair was headed home to Baytown when an alleged drunken driver T-boned Benton's SUV in an attempt to flee Pasadena Walmart security.

Prosecutors said Robby Jo Hovis, 28, was clutching less than $50 worth of unpaid merchandise, including a Hello Kitty purse and other small items, when she dashed out of the Fairmont Parkway store - pushing a Walmart security guard to the ground as she ran - and got behind the wheel of a white Ford F-150. Witnesses told Pasadena police officers that Hovis' truck sped toward the red light at the intersection of Fairmont and Nations and made no attempt to stop as she went through and collided with Anita Benton's red Dodge Magnum around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Benton, 50, was killed instantly and Winter Grasser, 15, was injured.

Hovis, who authorities said had a blood alcohol level of .175, twice the legal limit of .08 for driving, was charged Monday with intoxication manslaughter. Hovis told investigators she had one drink at dinner about 8:30 p.m. Saturday night.

The Cypress woman faces 20 years in prison if convicted of the charge.

Prosecutor Alison Baimbridge said more charges could be filed against Hovis, including for theft.
