An emotional gathering took place outside Memorial Hermann Hospital where little league baseball players trekked Friday to support one of their own. Gabe Rojas is being treated for a badly broken leg. The 11-year-old and his best friend Jartis Soloman were both sent to the hospital after they were hit by a car on Wednesday. “His spirits are high right now,” said David Rojas, Gabe’s father. “He’s a very strong kid. He’s fighting.” The accident happened at the Rojas’ home while the two boys were playing basketball in the driveway. “I heard his friend yelling,” said David Rojas Jr., Gabe’s older brother. “I turned around and saw the car hit my brother and him too and dragged him to the neighbor’s yard.” Jartis suffered a broken wrist, but Gabe’s injuries were more severe. He was pinned beneath the car for several minutes. Both boys play little league baseball and are members of the Texas Bombers. Their coach is raising money through a website to help pay their medical bills. “This is the smallest token I can do to repay them and get them pointed in the right direction for recovery,” said team coach David Trevino. According to investigators, the person driving the car was just a teenager who apparently lost control, but because of that accident, Gabe may have lost part of a dream. “He was going to be the next David Ortiz,” said Gabe’s aunt Cassey Pena-Jones. “He was going to be the next Astros star.” Gabe’s father continues to pray for a miracle. “We’re trying to stay optimistic and look forward to the day he plays another game, but that’s a long shot,” he said.
