Man who struck, killed man changing tire charged with murder

New charges were filed Wednesday against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash on Eastex Freeway Monday night, according to authorities. The crash occurred in the 9400 block of the Eastex Freeway around 10 p.m. Meregildo Portales, 57, was charged with murder in the 351st State District Court. Previously, he had been charged with intoxication manslaughter. The driver of the Mazda was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say two men were changing the tire of a truck while stopped on the moving lanes of the freeway when a second pickup slammed into the back of their truck, killing one of the man. The other man was hurt and taken to the hospital. The driver of the second pickup was not hurt. It's unlikely he will be charged.
