Lewis Winston III struck and killed doing maintenance work on I-37.

A road maintenance worker who died early Wednesday morning after being hit by a car on Interstate 37 has been identified as Lewis Winston III, 36.

Winston and another worker were picking up “sweepers ahead” signs just before 5 a.m. in the interstate's southbound lanes, in the 9000 block near Southeast Loop 410, according to a police report. Winston had been part of the crew using sweepers to clear debris from the roadway and was wearing a fluorescent green traffic vest, according to police.

Isaac Nathaniel Diaz, 23, told police he was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier southbound in the inside lane at about 70 miles per hour when a Toyota Camry switched into his lane in front of him. Diaz said the Camry's driver suddenly hit the brakes and began to slow down.

Diaz quickly hit his own brakes and tried to steer onto the paved shoulder, but his car began to spin, according to police. Diaz said he saw Winston standing on the grassy median just off the shoulder but was unable to avoid him.

Diaz's vehicle was going about 65 miles per hour when its front right quarter panel crashed into Winston, causing Winston to hit the windshield before being thrown into traffic lanes, according to police.

The Cavalier continued into the median before hitting the concrete retaining wall, but Diaz was able to stop it on the side of the road afterward, according to police. The Camry never stopped, according to police.

Emergency medical technicians treated Winston at the scene for multiple injuries before taking him to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he died about an hour after the crash, according to police.

The highway's southbound lanes closed for nearly three hours at Southeast Loop 410 after the accident. Police diverted traffic onto the loop.
