A driver died early Sunday in a crash that sent his engine flying across two lanes before his car burst into flames.

Roman Sokolov, 25, was speeding westbound in the 19000 block of Huebner Road in a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer just before 12:30 a.m., according to a police report. Victor Antonio Rodriguez III, 17, was driving a 2006 Volkswagen Beetle westbound ahead of Sokolov and tried to change lanes when he noticed Sokolov speeding behind him, according to police.

Sokolov was trying to pass Rodriguez at the same time and the two cars collided, according to police.

Sokolov's car crashed into the curb along the right side, causing him to lose control, according to police. The Mitsubishi crossed over two lanes and hit the curb of the center median, sending it head-on into a tree, according to police.

The engine was thrown from the Mitsubishi and flew across two lanes, according to police. The Mitsubishi became fully engulfed in flames, according to police.

Rodriguez drove away without helping Sokolov, according to police.

Emergency medical technicians and traffic investigators arrived on the scene. Sokolov was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m.

Rodriguez called to report the crash later and was interviewed by a detective, according to police. No charges have been filed.
