The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the woman fatally hit by a car Monday on Interstate 35 as Amber Garza, 27.

Garza was driving a Pontiac G6 southbound on Interstate 35 just after midnight in the 4800 block of the highway on the Northeast Side. Police said Garza could have been under the influence of alcohol when she hit the guardrail on the right side of the road.

The car became disabled and Garza began to argue with a passenger about the crash, according to police. Garza grabbed her purse, got out of the car and began to walk across the highway, police said. She was hit by a black Chevrolet Malibu headed south, police said.

Garza flew into the Malibu's front windshield before landing in the highway's main lanes, according to police. The Malibu's driver took the next exit off the highway and stopped, police said.

Garza was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Malibu's driver was not impaired and no criminal charges are pending, police said.
