Police said the driver stopped to render aid and was not expected to face charges because the accident could not be avoided.
Dolores Soto, 58, was hit and killed on SW 21st Street near Commerce Street shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday by a man driving a Chevrolet Tahoe. The driver of the SUV remained at the crash site and tried to get medical aid for Soto. According to police, the driver was not drunk and would likely not face criminal charges, since Soto was dressed in dark clothing and not in a crosswalk when she went to cross SW 21st Street in an area with poor lighting. There was no indication in the police report that the driver was speeding, but it indicated rather that he just did not see her.
