Two men are behind bars Tuesday after a bizarre murder that led to a dramatic crash near downtown Orem.

At first it looked like a simple accident, but once cops started digging a little deeper they realized this was a case of cold blooded murder.

Officers were dispatched to a traffic accident in the area of 200 E. 800 N. The caller was a homeowner in the area who had heard the accident and went outside to see what it was.

When officers arrived, they found one person outside of a gold 1998 Saturn passenger car, lying on the ground, near the rear passenger door. Upon further inspection officers found another person partially in the driver's seat.

Police identified the man lying on the ground as Mason French, 24; he appeared to have received minor injuries during the crash, but was able to communicate with officers.

The man in the driver seat, who has been identified as Rupert Miley, 42, was not conscious.

Investigators quickly began to notice conflicting information. The amount of blood on the driver didn't match the injuries that the officers could see. They started asking the passenger more detailed questions. French's answers weren't matching up with the evidence; after a closer look at the driver, police discovered he had a gunshot wound in his back.

During the process of following up on leads, Orem Detectives found there was the possibility of a third person being involved. Detectives and agents from the Joint Criminal Apprehension Team (J.C.A.T.) were briefed on the incident and began their search for the 2nd suspected passenger.

Agents found Travis Waldron, 24, at a home in Southwest Orem. Police took Travis into custody; he was escorted to the Orem Police Department to be interviewed by detectives.

After further questioning the Utah County Attorney's Office decided that both French and Waldron will be charged with 1st Degree Murder and 2nd Degree Obstruction of Justice.

Waldron will also be charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Restricted Person. They are both being held at the Orem Police Department. They will be booked into the Utah County Jail Tuesday and the case will be turned over to the Utah County Attorney's Office.
