A woman, Rosa Merino, was struck by a pickup truck in a Provo crosswalk Wednesday morning later died from her injuries at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

Provo police said the accident occurred at 6:20 a.m. as the woman was crossing westbound at the intersection of 700 N. University Avenue, about three blocks from Brigham Young University. It was still dark when the 1985 GMC pickup hit her.

Initially, dispatchers were told the woman was not breathing and had no pulse. Witnesses began CPR, and when paramedics arrived they were able to find a faint pulse before the woman was taken from the scene by ambulance, police said.

However, doctors declared the woman dead at 8:20 a.m.

Police could not find any identification on the woman but did discover a letter on her person they hoped would lead them to learn her name.

The accident remained under investigation, but no evidence of the male driver being impaired was initially discovered, police said.
