A carjacking in West Valley City ended in a crash with a police car in downtown Salt Lake City Friday afternoon.

A carjacking in West Valley City ended in a crash with a police car in downtown Salt Lake City Friday afternoon.

About half-a-dozen Salt Lake City and West Valley City police cars ended up surrounding the stolen vehicle near a Phillips 66 station at 300 West and 400 South about 1 p.m.

Salt Lake City police confirmed that officers had to deploy their Tasers to take the male suspect into custody, but not until after he tried to drive out of the station parking lot by repeatedly ramming an unmarked police car and then fought with officers trying to arrest him.

A female passenger in the pickup also was arrested, but surrendered peacefully. Nobody was injured.

The incident had begun about 12:30 p.m. when the suspect asked the owner of the white Chevrolet pickup truck for a ride to a gas station. However, near 3100 West and 3100 South, the suspect stole the truck at knifepoint. The victims left the vehicle and were unharmed.

Officers were able to track the truck’s GPS signal into Salt Lake City, where officers located the vehicle.
