Man Rescued After Crashing Car into Jordan River

A man was rescued after crashing his car into the Jordan River near 500 North and Redwood Road Sunday morning.

A man was rescued after crashing his car into the Jordan River near 500 North and Redwood Road Sunday morning.

The Salt Lake City Police Department says the man was driving on 500 North when he hit a truck and went over a curb.

Police estimate the vehicle flew about 25 feet in the air before it landed on its side in the Jordan River.

Police say the man climbed out of the car and sat on the partially submerged vehicle until a rescue team from the Salt Lake City Fire Department was able to help him to shore.

Investigators believe the man may have been street racing.

"Speed limits in this neighborhood would be 25 to 30 miles per hour, tops. To hit that vehicle and hit a curb and fly between 25 and 50 feet in the air, his speeds were certainly faster than that," police said.

The man escaped the incident with a broken leg and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
