Bell said it appeared the motorcyclist, northbound on 5600 West, sped up as he approached the intersection, where the traffic signal had turned yellow. The van, facing southbound, also tried to beat the light, turning eastbound into the path of the motorcycle.

The officer immediately began administering first aid to the motorcyclist, Stone Feather Donald Brisbane, 20, who was wearing a helmet and protective gear, until an ambulance arrived. Brisbane, of West Valley City, suffered extensive injuries, however, and died en route to the hospital.
